Max De Bernardi
Oggi abbiamo l'onore di intervistare il musicista che, a nostro modesto parere e per quanto ne sappiamo fino ad ora, si è insindacabilmente guadagnato il titolo di "master of uke" della penisola.
Si chiama Max De Bernardi ed è di Milano, ma la sua musica sembra provenire direttamente da un'ansa del Mississipi piuttosto che dai Navigli, e la sua voce è una delle più "nere" che vi possa capitare di ascoltare.
Dopo aver impararto a padroneggiare chitarre e vari altri cordofoni, già da parecchi anni si dedica anche al nostro strumento preferito.

AB: Qando hai cominciato a suonare l’ukulele? Come è capitato?
Max: Ho cominciato a suonarlo nel 2002 dopo aver visto Joe Brown nel concerto in memoria di George Harrison (noto collezionista, suonatore e appassionato di ukes) suonare “I’ll see you in my dreams” sul finale con il suo Martin vintage soprano…il giorno dopo ho chiesto al mio fornitore di strumenti di fiducia se aveva uno uke in casa e mi disse che poteva procurarmi un Martin soprano in pochi giorni ad un buon prezzo…così presi il Martin soprano che posseggo (usatissimo) ancora adesso…e lì cominciò la malattia!
AB: Che cosa ti attrae di questo strumento? Quali sono i suoi pregi secondo te?
Max: La simpatia della forma e delle dimensioni. La trasportabilità e la possibilità di “ukulelizzare” qualsiasi canzone…non saprei neanche io, mi piace e basta!
AB: Che tipo di apprendistato hai avuto (o continui ad avere)? Autodidatta? Un maestro? Ti sei avvalso dell’ausilio di libri, DVD, o risorse sul web? Hai qualche dritta al riguardo da dare agli ukulelisti Italiani?
Max: Suonando già la chitarra acustica, il mandolino, il banjo etc. etc., una volta capito come si accordava, nel giro di un giorno avevo già il repertorio per ukulele…niente libri, DVD o roba del genere…non li sopporto…mi annoiano…preferisco fare da solo….ed è il consiglio che mi sento di dare agli ukulelisti italiani: prendete lo uke e suonatelo come vi pare!
AB: Quali tipi e quanti ukulele possiedi al momento e come te li sei procurati?
Max: Come dicevo ho il mio numero uno che è un Martin soprano, poi un baritono, un concerto e un banjolele e un altro soprano più economico, tutti comprati in Italia…ma non escludo prossimi nuovi acquisti a breve…
AB: Che accordatura usi, GCEA con Sol rientrante o altre?
Max: GCEA sui formati piccoli e standard, DGBE sul baritono.
AB: Che corde usi?
Max: Per i piccoli uso le D’Addario…per il baritono uso le corde per chitarra classica sfuse con in genere il RE e il SOL bronze…
AB: In che rapporti stai con il Sol rientrante? Antipatia, simpatia, guerra aperta, è la peculiarità dell’uku che preferisci, venendo dalla chitarra non riesci proprio a relazionartici, è diventato il tuo miglior amico?
Max: Ho semplicemente preso atto che era così…mi è indifferente la cosa.
AB: Suoni l’ukulele tutti i giorni? Quanto a lungo?
Max: No…ogni tanto…non suono molto in casa….suonando per lavoro suono già tanto fuori quindi…
AB: Ti sembra uno strumento addatto al tuo genere, il blues? Per quale ragione?
Max: A parte che io non suono strettamente blues ma anche altri generi affiliati penso che lo uke sia adattabile a qualsiasi genere musicale…basta volerlo!
AB: Lo usi per accompagnare il canto o anche in assolo?
Max: Lo uso per tutto…anche per cucinare!
AB: Qual’è la reazione del pubblico o dei colleghi musicisti quando ti vedono imbracciare il tuo inusuale (almeno in Italia) strumento?
Max: La reazione del pubblico, quando è sufficientemente attento e intelligente per accorgesene, quindi quasi mai, è sempre di sorpresa e simpatia, anche se la maggior parte delle volte lo scambiano per un mandolino o altre cose del genere…è difficile trovare qualcuno che viene da te e ti dice:-Ah…BELLO!...UN’UKULELE!-
Gli altri musicisti che non suonano con me hanno la frase standard:-Figata l’ukulele eh??!!!!...suona eh??!!!!...bello…vai!!!- …quelli che suonano con me invece sanno che quando lo sfodero è il momento delle pirlate, ma devono stare zitti e subire anche un set con lo uke se no non li pago!
AB: Il fatto di essere tra i pionieri dell’uku in Italia ti rende orgoglioso e geloso di questo primato oppure sei per il proselitismo?
Max: Non credo di essere pioniere di niente…Rino Gaetano lo suonò a Sanremo nel 78…lui può essere considerato pioniere…per quanto mi riguarda vorrei trovare tanti suonatori di uke e formare una band gigantesca itinerante di soli ukes per sensibilizzare i politici, la chiesa e l’intero popolo italiano a darsi all’ukulele…il nostro paese migliorerebbe di molto…quindi proselitismo assoluto!
AB: Hai qualche aneddoto particolare da raccontarci riguardo il tuo ukulele?
Max: Sì…una volta ero vicino a Zurigo per una gig e ho dimenticato il mio Martin sul tetto della macchina…chiaramente siamo partiti e mi sono accorto che lo uke non c’era solo quando sono arrivato sul luogo dove suonavo che era in montagna e a qualche km di distanza…sono ritornato dove l’avevo perso e chiaramente non c’era più….
Un’amica che abita li fece un inserzione su un giornalino locale per vedere se qualcuno lo aveva ritrovato…dopo un mese una vedova di un musicista lo riportò alla mia amica dicendole che lo aveva conservato pensandolo un segno del marito defunto!
Per questo il Martin è diventato il numero uno…è così….una volta che si affeziona lo uke non ti molla più!
AB: Conosci personalmente altri Ukulelisti in Italia?
Max: Sì…Veronica, la mia compagna J
AB: Secondo te esiste un profilo psicologico preciso dell’ukulelista? Voglio dire: ti sembra che l’ukulele attragga caratteri e personalità di un certo tipo oppure no?
Max: Sì…in genere ironia e una piccola dose di follia sono indispensabili!
AB: Che cosa il tuo carattere ha in comune con il tuo strumento? ;-)
Max: Niente…lo uke è sicuramente più bello e più simpatico da vedersi di me…
